Company Overview
Ebay is an extremely popular online marketplace where people and businesses can buy and sell items. There are more than 145 million buyers online, and with over 700 million items listed, eBay can be considered one of the hugest online marketplaces(eBayinc, para 2). People internationally are able to do business together over eBay’s website. EBay works together with PayPal and Skype to improve online commerce.
Company History
EBay was originally named AuctionWeb, which was founded in 1995 by Pierre Omidyar. The headquarters lie in San Jose, California, where eBay was founded. In 1996 Jeffrey Skoll was hired to be the president. In 1997 AuctionWeb became a huge hit holding almost 2 million auctions. It was renamed in September of 1997 to eBay, short for its consulting firm Echo Bay Technology Group. EBay has been upsizing and has bought out many companies such as the purchase PayPal in 2002, Craigslist in 2004, Skype in 2005, and StubHub in 2007. EBay formed eBayinc in 2014 which incorporates eBay and PayPal. Ebay plans to take over communicating with their acquisition of Skype, and better their financial services with the acquisition of PayPal, while also increasing advertising(An Older, Wiser EBay, Growing Patiently; Walker).
Company Work Culture and Environment
EBay has been focusing on ways to benefit their customers. Members of high authority from eBay believe acquiring Skype will help communication for online shoppers and acquiring PayPal will help make the financial part of buying and selling much easier. The eBay Foundation works with small businesses to help them grow and succeed. The foundation came up with The Opportunity Project to help small businesses, create more jobs, and increase affordable commerce(Ebayinc, social-innovation. para 4). Employees of eBay created Green teams and GIVE teams. Green teams typically hold events such as cleaning up a park or recycling. GIVE teams raise money to give grants to people and communities(Ebayinc, employee engagement. para 1).
Company Values
EBay values providing services to their customers that are simple and efficient. EBay wants to give back to its customers by partnering up to fix peoples everyday problems. In 2013 eBay and its users raised $85 million dollars(Ebayinc, powering giving, visual). EBay allows people and businesses to build strong relationships with one another making commerce less troublesome. The idea is for eBay to make buying and selling almost anything simpler by allowing consumers to do everything all in one easy to find spot.
Company Growth and Stability
Ebay is a very young company for how successful they are, they were able to become well known very fast.
Company Caveats
Individuals who are selling goods in online auctions have little protection. Stolen credit cards, fake money orders and bounced checks are risks they face. Once online sellers accept a stolen card, they often find that the credit card company is of no help. Under federal law, the owner of the credit card would not have to pay for those items. The credit card companies do not have to cover the cost either; they are liable for the purchases only if the seller got a signature from the card holder. So the seller bears the cost and will never be paid. This problem is something that has had an impact on my decision to not purchase and sell items on ebay or sites similar. With how advanced technology is now a days it is hard for me to trust a website to keep my personal information protected.
Company Reputation
Ebay has taken the number one spot in a new ranking of the the top social media brands, carried out by Yomego. A number of factors were involved in tabulating the list but from what I can tell it was primarily based on overall reach and satisfaction in determining where companies landed in the top 50.Satisfaction around the Ebay brand is remarkably high, driven by the natural instinct of telling others when they've snagged a deal.
Company Competitors
The three main competitors that Ebay has are Amazon, Google, and Overstock
Company Investments
Whether you are buying or selling, you can support your favorite charities by using eBay for your transaction through eBay Giving Works. Giving Works is a program by which sellers can choose to have a portion of the revenue from an item's sale donated directly to a charity of his or her choosing. Both the charity and percentage of the donation are chosen when the seller lists the item. Buyers interested in giving to a specific charity with their eBay purchases can search for items by charity in order to ensure that their bids go to help someone in need.
Company Locations
EBay is an online marketplace, so almost all the interactions are over the internet, but eBay has offices in Utah, California, Washington, Washington D.C., Australia, India, China, Korea , and many throughout Europe.
